Canadian Pond Newsletter Summer 2007 Issue: 19

The beautiful summer season is upon us here at Canadianpond.ca! After the beginning of a dry, hot spring, much needed rain has been encouraging surface runoff and sedimentation of our lovely ponds, carrying unwanted nutrients into surface water systems. The much needed rain is also doing the important work of recharging the water table. These rather particular conditions of drought followed by steady rain has accelerated the appearance of algae, and this year our trusted clients are wasting no time searching for solutions. Our summer gazette has some interesting studies about how our products perform, and how we are working to better serve you, our clients. Read about:

- the application of our products by the Société d'Aménagement du Lac des Bleuets as reported on national television,

- the new garden windmill by Koenders,

- early feedback on the Plocher products,

- publication of a report showing the benefit of aeration for digestion of muck in a lake in the United States,

- how the floating islands performed this season after spending a winter in the frozen Canadian waters,

- Mario's trip to AWWA (American Water Works Association) conference in Toronto from June 24 to 28, 2007 to meet prospective customers and suppliers there.

  • Report on TVA-Saguenay following application of our products in Lac Bluet

The Société d'Aménagement du lac des bleuets ( Blueberry Lake Association, our translation) contacted us in 2006 because their lake was declining toward an advanced stage of eutrophication. They wanted to install a Veryex system of aeration and also to introduce a regime of beneficial bacteria into the water at regular intervals.

One year after the installation of the various systems and the bioaugmentation program, the Society members reported to us lake conditions that were beyond their expectations. While other lakes in Quebec are being closed due to problems with algae and the dreaded cyannobacteria, Lac Bluet is in excellent conditon. Download the following TVA video clip as the journalists report on improved water conditons at Lac Bluet: download the video here.

  • Garden Windmills from Koenders

We are pleased to introduce our new Garden Windmill for aerating small water gardens or simply for garden decor. The new model measures 10 feet high and is available in standard galvanized metal or various colour combinations (red & white, yellow & green or bronze). This basic garden windmill model can be upgraded to function as a fully operational aerator, adding to its picturesque beauty.

  • A report on the effictiveness of aeration to eliminate acccumulated sediment on the lake bottom

A report commissioned by an independant party (in Michigan, USA) demonstrates the reduction of organic lake bottom sediments after the installation of a properly designed aeration system.

In this study, a Vertex CoActive Airstation XL (see installation diagram) was designed and installed . Delivering oxygen to the lake bottom using this system is a very effective way to introduce oxygen into eutrophic water. Oxygen is necessary for the bacteria to thrive, and it is the bacteria that do the important work of digesting the nutrient rich sediment.

Two detailed reports including observed results are available by clicking on the following link: study presentation, study results.

So again with our assistance, positive results are obtained by using aeration in a troubled aquatic environment. How many years of water quality problems, particularly those associated with cyannobacteria will we need before governments take a serious look at phosphorous laden sediment, and then take serious action to remediate the problem?

  • Floating islands over winter beautifully in Canada

Many of our Canadian clients have been reluctant to invest in floating island technology for fear of losing their indigeneous aquatic plants to freezing and dying in the frigid ice of a northern winter. Just as we instinctively knew, the islands and the plants performed beautifully locked in the frigid ice of Canadian waters! Come spring, the shoots of iris versicolor or the tendrils of lysmachia nummularia grew wonderfully in their warm aquatic habitat of the floating islands.

We have received the first photos from our clients who are raving about their islands, particularly how they are used by ducks or herons. Remember floating islands create brand new aquatic habitat that never existed before!

  • Mario visited the AWWA conference in Toronto from June 24 to 28, 2007

Mario has just returned from the American Water Works Association conference where he met many leaders in the field of aquatic management from across North America. Representatives from municipal, provincial and federal governments have the chance to see what industry and commerce are doing for aquatic environments. He returned feeling confident that our own technologies and techniques for aeration were well received by important water managers from all sectors. At home and on the international stage, Canadianpond.ca Products Limited is an important leader in aquatic management and we are well known for the products, service and expertise offered by our team.
