FLOATING
ISLANDS BioHaven
large floating islands offer a unique way to dramatically improve the quality
of your pond, enhance habitat for fish, and beautify your waterscape. Available
in sizes from 25 square feet to 400 square feet and beyond; these floating islands
can be used to create walkways, floating gardens and unique plantable structures
that can even hold gazebos or other structures. For smaller ponds we have a line
of small floating islands.
Beautify
and add interest to the waterscape Thick with green
growth and with the colorful spark of flowers a small floating Island will be
an enchanting addition to any waterscape. Islands can be small enough for a water
garden or large enough to help clean larger water ponds. There are no hard and
fast rules of what size island to add; go with the number of islands that looks
best! Attaching several islands together can look stunning in a backyard pond!
BioHaven Floating Islands The
unique matrix material of the island, a unique blend of re-cycled polyester fibres,
actually allows plants to grow as if they were in rich soil. The roots of the
plants absord nutrients directly from the pond, reducing the phosphates and other
nutrients in the pond while flourishing plants bloom on the floating island and
provide shelter and nesting areas for birds, turtles and other pond creatures.
 The
islands are available in standard shapes and sizes ranging from 25 square foot
up to 400 square feet. Custom sized island sizes and shapes are available and
include the required amount of planting BioMix

Floating Islandscapes from Freedom Ponds
 Canals
and ponds in cities and towns can become a haven for birds and aquatic creatures.

Benefits
of a Floating Island Natural
improvement of water quality.
Report on the East Lake Floating Island Project
Floating
Islands can be an effective tool in maintaining the health of water gardens, ponds
and lakes. The island itself is constructed of a patented combination of materials
that encourage the stabilization and efficient growth of plants and vegetation.
The plant root structures that grow through the floating island's substrate
feed on nutrients in the pond. Since these nutrients often lead to algae, cloudy
water or mucky buildup a floating island becomes a natural water filter, one that
is not only natural and highly effective, but also extremely beautiful.By
adding a floating island and a combination of aeration and beneficial bacteria
to the same pond or lake you can see dramatic improvements in pond water quality.
Islands are ideal for municipalities or in commercial applications where harsh
chemicals are not an option but a water treatment program is required. BioHaven
Floating Islands are on the cutting edge of water quality maintenance and habitat
restoration and are available through CanadianPond.ca Products Limited. The floating
islands use the basic principles of hydroponics to clean ponds and lakes via the
filtration effects that plants offer. BioHaven floating islands are available
in sizes ranging from 25 to 400 square feet and beyond.
Root
structures penetrate the materials of the floating island and absorb surplus nutrients
from the pond or ecosystem providing a natural cleansing of the pond. BioHaven
Floating Islands use patented materials and designs, making them the only choice
for any serious project involving water treatment or guaranteed aesthetics and
longevity.
Islands can be easily attached together to create larger areas
or clustered groups.
Beautify
and add interest to the waterscape Thick with green
growth and with the colorful spark of flowers a Floating Island will be an enchanting
addition to any waterscape. Islands can be small enough for a water garden or
large enough to help clean larger water bodies. The pond cleaning powers of the
island are increased with aeration systems and bio-augmentation.

Wastewater
and Stormwater Management Easy
to manage 4 foot by 8 foot floating island modules can be attached to form extremely
efficient filtration systems to reduce suspended materials, reduce phosphates
and nitrates, and help sequester carbon. This
diagram shows possible ways of retrofitting a given surface area of floating treatment
wetland into the wet pond stormwater treatment system recommended in ARC TP10.

Enhance
fish habitat Fish will naturally benefit from improvements
in water quality, and the root masses growing down into the pond water help provide
a source of food source for small fish - which in turn feed the bigger ones. Fish
regularly gather under floating islands to take advantage of the cool shade and
to escape predators like herons, osprey, and eagles.

This photo shows a large floating island being anchored in place. The choice
of plants and vegetation is dependent on the local conditions and the wishes of
the client.
Indigenous plants are often best but some islands use a combination
of decorative flowering aquatic plants with hearty grasses. An island this size
can be planted and anchored into place in a few hours by 3 or 4 people.Provide
wildlife habitat Floating islands provide resting
and nesting habitat for ducks and loons, avocets and snipe, and a host of other
local bird species. Frogs deposit their eggs on the plant root structure, salamanders
patrol the waterline, turtles climb aboard out to sun themselves, and dashing
blue dragonflies hover and feed on mosquitoes.. This
photo shows an incredible congregation of fish grouped under the floating
island.

Floating
islands overcome many of the disadvantages and limitations of current biotechnology
for natural water purification. By providing an expandable biological process
to include wetland plants perched in artificial substrate, add-on super airlift
biofilters, add-on subsurface aeration and a regimen of microbial supplements,
the technology efficiently and effectively breaks down aquatic pollutants in lake,
pond, wetlands and wastewater environments.
Built
of recycled polymer matrix bonded with marine foam, the BioHaven Wild Floating Island
creates a super-enhanced floating habitat. Water can circulate through the body
of the island and plant roots can grow through it. Compared
to earthen islands, the BioHaven Wild Floating Islands are lighter, easier and
less expensive to install, allow plants to establish faster, and can extend the
growing season.
Small
Islands: up to 128 sq ft are prefabricated
in one piece and can be planted on site and launched Larger
Island - 128 to 1,000 sq ft are fabricated
on site and require 4-8
hours for a crew to assemble, plant, and launch. Planting:
Option A: no plants provided (floating island structure only) Option
B: plants of your choice come supplied but not planted (island and plants
provided but not installed) Option C: Our
skilled crew will assemble and install your selected plants and launch your island
(turnkey installation) Linking
Islands: You can
buy 2 or 3 or more small islands and easily link them together. |
Scientific
Construction
- Plant growth substrate
is recycled polymer matrix. Plant roots can easily grow through, and anchor to,
the excellent plant base.
- Matrix
fibers and wetland plant root hair provide high, specific surface area attachment
points for colonization of nitrogen- and phosphorus-reducing microbes.
- Substrate
also supports microbe attachment and growth of select beneficial microbes. On-site
biofiltration and rapid nutrient removal is possible. The aerobic microbial purification
process converts waste organic matter in two steps: by direct oxidation of biodegradable
matter, and by endogenous respiration where cellular material is oxidized. The
entire process is carried out by specialized, naturally occurring microbes developed
over years of research. These processes can be illustrated in the following two
equations:
- Eq
1: Organic matter + NH4+ + Cellular Material +
nitrifying microbes +C02 + H20
- Eq
2: Cellular material (nutrients) + Oxygen microbes digested sludge
+ C02 + H20 + N03
